According to an April 21 AP newswire story, six wild mustangs that were sold to a private owner in Oklahoma have been slaughtered at Cavel International in DeKalb, Ill.

Celia Boddington, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), says the recent sale of the horses is being investigated. The transaction that occurred that allowed the horses to be slaughtered was not illegal, but the BLM has stressed the importance of finding adopted wild horses and burros long-term care.

The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 was amended in November to allow the public sale of wild horses and burros with no restrictions. Any criminal penalties that could be incurred for slaughtering a wild horse and burro were also repealed in the new legislation.

The BLM says this is the first case it is aware of in which wild horses have been slaughtered under the new legislation
