I use whats left in a tube to meet dosage for draft horses.
2/25/2013 1:17:37 PM
The products are safe to overdose but you encourage worm resistance by underdosing.
2/25/2013 4:43:58 AM
both my horses within 15-25 lbs. of dosage , so I think they're within tolerable range
2/24/2013 6:49:38 PM
I don't use pastes but purchase liquids in bulk.
2/24/2013 3:28:25 PM
my horses are large and usually manage to spit some out so I give the whole tube
2/24/2013 2:31:47 PM
depends on the product sometimes by weight other times the whole tube
2/24/2013 12:09:44 AM
My horses are 1000-1100 lbs, and they spit out some of the wormer, so I give them the entire syringe
2/23/2013 5:05:37 PM
I give entire dewormer even if my horse weighs less, anything else I dose appropriately.
2/23/2013 12:40:39 PM
It helps account for the dosing portion lost in various ways.
2/23/2013 12:00:28 PM
I have also given the whole tube even if the horse weighs less
2/23/2013 7:13:48 AM
Give the does Plus some due to spitage, an toss the rest(i/e: wormers) If a script I save the rest.
2/23/2013 4:01:38 AM
For wormers I dose to weight and save the rest to apply topically for summer sores.
2/22/2013 8:20:03 PM
we have 5 horses and a donkey so left over dosage goes to pony and donkey so no product left
2/22/2013 5:41:19 PM
follow the manufacturers directions, I do however give a little bit more in case of 'spitback'
2/22/2013 5:20:34 PM
Actually give the remaining to my other horse as she weighs more than the syringe carries
2/22/2013 4:31:40 PM
Use leftovers for the younger horses.
2/22/2013 4:18:16 PM
I need to use 1 1/2 tubes of dewormer for my horse so I save extra for next rotation w/product
2/22/2013 4:03:00 PM
I can't seem to judge how much is "lost" whenhe spits some out so I cover for that by giving all
2/22/2013 3:35:59 PM
Use all if close to weight, If not remainder is used on horses over the weight.
2/22/2013 1:46:13 PM
I havre horses of significantly differing weights- combine and adjust amts. as nec.
2/22/2013 11:58:20 AM
How about depending on what the product is! I toss wormer but I save bute.
2/22/2013 10:57:00 AM
I dose a little over indicated amount
2/22/2013 7:26:52 AM
As my guy is big, I never have any residual paste.
2/22/2013 7:09:24 AM
Dose to horse's weight and save the remainder for next dose only if stored properly and still fresh
2/22/2013 12:33:36 AM
Depends on product. If overdose takes huge amounts, I don't worry about a bit extra. Plus they spit!
2/22/2013 12:01:20 AM
horse is close to dose weight and usually spits out some
2/21/2013 11:59:18 PM
sometimes use remainder of de-wormer for dogs & cats
2/21/2013 8:50:13 PM
Read the expiration date, sometimes it cannot be saved for future use
2/21/2013 6:43:01 PM
It doesn't seem very sanitary to save meds after you have stuck the tube end into the horse's mouth.
2/21/2013 6:31:30 PM
To cover for wormer wastage and weight estimates, only adult horses.
2/21/2013 6:20:20 PM
Because they spit out an unknown quantity so I give the whole tube as in wormer paste.
2/21/2013 6:14:39 PM
my guys on fields 24/7 so worm alittle more often save/clean/cap 1/2tube as warmblood 11/2 tube p/d
2/21/2013 5:48:51 PM
mix right dose in grain and then with next horse use the remainer plus more to get right dose , 20
2/21/2013 5:48:23 PM
If I save it, I use it immediately in a fresh syringe.
2/21/2013 5:37:49 PM
unless there is a significant gap between my horses weight .d
2/21/2013 11:27:36 AM
usually overdose 100 lbs.
2/21/2013 10:12:32 AM
If it's de-wormer, I dose to their weight and discard. If it's bute, I save the remainder.
2/21/2013 9:44:01 AM
I always give the whole tube since his weight is equal to one tube. If he was under I would discard
2/21/2013 8:07:43 AM
If it's dewormed I give the whole syringe; if it's medication like bute I dose by weight and save
2/21/2013 7:41:36 AM
Also depends on the product. I throw out left-over paste wormers, keep the bute, banamine, etc.
2/20/2013 5:06:03 PM
Can give the rest to Kermit Phelps...hehe
2/20/2013 4:34:16 PM
They ususally spit out what I calculate to be the difference,
2/20/2013 4:05:26 PM
Sometimes, I use remainder to worm other pets if safe/nontoxic for that pet.
2/20/2013 2:19:22 PM
depends upon the product - discard balance of dewormer; keep banamine/bute paste
2/20/2013 12:04:21 PM
I have a donkey & an Icelandic that split a tube
2/20/2013 11:54:29 AM
depends on the product, if a wormer I give the whole tube
2/20/2013 11:14:20 AM
Discard the leftover dewormer, save the Banamine (tube=3 doses)
2/20/2013 10:34:19 AM
We have Minis, it would be a waste to toss almost a whole syringe after worming one horse.
2/20/2013 9:34:32 AM
i have a mini he gets the remainder.
2/20/2013 9:30:22 AM
With my donkeys I split a tube between them but the horses just get the whole tube.
2/20/2013 8:49:38 AM
It is best to overdose the worms and kill them than underdose and have them live and gain reistance
2/20/2013 8:34:01 AM
my horses weigh more and usually some gets dropped
2/20/2013 7:49:06 AM
I give the remainder to the donkey
2/20/2013 7:42:00 AM
It depends on the product; I give the full tube of dewormer, anything else, dose by weight.
2/20/2013 7:25:06 AM
Depends on how much is left in he syringe.
2/20/2013 7:24:38 AM
with the safety margin they claim why not ?
2/20/2013 6:21:04 AM
is it safe to keep it, does it lose its effectiveness after being used, doesn't say on instructions.
2/20/2013 5:28:09 AM
Toss the rest; not risking bacterial growth on an opened/used product
2/20/2013 3:07:17 AM
The only paste product I save is banamine.
2/20/2013 2:41:30 AM
Dose to one horse's weight, and use the rest for the next horse-don't have to buy as much that way!
2/19/2013 11:20:11 PM
There usually isnt enough left worth saving.
2/19/2013 10:43:00 PM
if it is a baby you need to do buy weight we had bought a 1 year old nothing but worms vet said give
2/19/2013 10:33:22 PM
Usually some gets spit out and the overdose limit is way more than the little extra left in the tube
2/19/2013 9:33:17 PM
generaly double the recomended dose with Zimectren, have done this for 30 years
2/19/2013 9:00:35 PM
If the horses weight is within 100 of dose I give entire dose, adult horses, not foals or weanlings.
2/19/2013 8:47:18 PM
I have nine horses and a pony. I can give the pony her weight dose with the extra from the horses.
2/19/2013 8:18:25 PM
it depends on the product. wormer whole tube unless its a pony. other things i follow directions.
2/19/2013 7:54:09 PM
I give my mini donkey the extra from the smaller horse tubes.
2/19/2013 7:43:52 PM
excess wormer discarded; some like bute or banamine have multiple doses
2/19/2013 7:23:42 PM
actually, save remainder to dose the goats.
2/19/2013 7:20:03 PM
Use the rest for another horse
2/19/2013 6:27:25 PM
Be sure to clean the end of the tube!
2/19/2013 6:26:31 PM
Administer as close to their weight, serval horses so younger ones get the ends.
2/19/2013 6:21:38 PM
Only for dewormer. If it's bute, I give the correct amount and save the rest for the next dose.
2/19/2013 5:59:54 PM
Most dosages are for a 1200 pound animal; mine is 1125.
2/19/2013 5:58:26 PM
actually depends on what I'm dosing - wormer they get the whole thing if it's only a couple 100 #'s
2/19/2013 5:54:03 PM
Except for my pony - she is so small I can usually get 2 doses from one syringe!
2/19/2013 5:30:08 PM
Give all unless horse weight is more than 200 lbs less than dosage.
2/19/2013 5:28:07 PM
We use the balance for donkeys etc. putting several dose balances together to meet the correct amoun
2/19/2013 5:22:06 PM
Not enough paste left for another dose.
2/19/2013 5:17:38 PM
I might give all the product if the weight is within 100lbs or so.
2/19/2013 5:12:32 PM
Always refrigerate unused portions and use together with other partials
2/19/2013 5:10:19 PM
Depends on how much product is left in syringe and if giving more is harmful or not
2/19/2013 4:57:33 PM
my big warmblood needs a high dosing amount. most products only good to 1200-1300 pounds.
2/19/2013 4:30:40 PM
Depends on how the medication is packaged.
2/19/2013 4:26:46 PM
We have Draft Horses, when we have left over on the 2nd dose we save for the Mini Horses
2/19/2013 4:15:30 PM
Our horses are large enough that their weight matches the full tube of worming meds.
2/19/2013 4:13:57 PM
Or the shelf life of the product.
2/19/2013 3:45:22 PM
my horses need 1 1/2 tubes
2/19/2013 2:12:59 PM
To get a more accurate weight, measure and use weight formula, NOT just a weight tape.
2/19/2013 2:04:09 PM
wormer gets discarded, bute & banamine saved
2/19/2013 1:45:09 PM
I weigh all horses every time. Excess is used for the next horse. 10 horses=6 dewormers
2/19/2013 9:45:40 AM
It depends on what paste it is, wormer, pain reliever???
