A New Mexico teen who spent two years saving to purchase a horse has fallen victim to an alleged off-shore cyber scam, local law enforcement authorities say.

Sergeant Aaron Williamson, public information officer for the Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Sheriff’s Office, said deputies responded to a call on Jan. 31 from a young woman who reported paying $1,000 to purchase a Palomino horse from an online seller. According to the report, the horse was listed online as available for adoption, free of charge. The young woman answered the advertisement and contacted the horse’s alleged owner, Marie Nok. The report said the horse was located in St. Louis, Missouri, and Nok allegedly required $1,072 to transport the animal to from St. Louis to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The report said the young woman allegedly sent the money, as instructed, via Western Union to an individual in Thailand. In a subsequent email, Nok allegedly asked the young woman for an additional $4,800 to cover insurance, the report said.
