National competitive trail mileage record holder Elmer Bandit, 38, passed away Feb. 14 in the pasture of his longtime boarding stable, surrounded by several friends and his lifelong owner, Mary Anna Wood.

Following his final competition in September 2009 Elmer’s lifetime mileage stood at 20,780 miles, surpassing the previous record held by Wing Tempo. Elmer won numerous National Championships over his 34-year career.

Readers of The Horse have enthusiastically followed Elmer through competitions, dressage lessons, and more, since spring 2008 due to dedicated reporting by Marsha Hayes.
