A herd of more than 60 horses are receiving rehabilitative care after law enforcement authorities removed them from a farm in Seminole County, Okla., last week.

Natalee Cross, director of Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue, Inc., in Jones, Okla., said that on April 6 the organization helped Seminole County law enforcement authorities remove 63 allegedly maltreated horses from a farm near Wewoka, Okla. The herd includes Haflinger, Icelandic, Friesian, and Paint horses ranging in age from yearlings to late teens, some of which could be pregnant, Cross said. At the time of their removal the horses were in poor condition with body condition scores of between one and four on the Henneke Body Condition scale; one horse has died since the removal, Cross said.

A representative for the Seminole County District Attorney’s office said that the animals’ owner, Carolyn Vaughn, was arrested and held at the Seminole County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. On April 8, Vaughn appeared in Seminole County Court for a detention hearing and was subsequently released on bond. Charges in the case are pending, the representative said.
