Barbaro’s Condition “Stable” Friday

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro spent a restful night and his condition is stable, according to Dean Richardson, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, Chief of Surgery. At a news conference yesterday, Richardson announced that the three-year-old colt has laminitis.

Laminitis is a painful condition in horses that can be the result of a number of causes, including excessive weight bearing in one limb. It occurs when laminae, the strong connecting tissues that attach the pedal bone and the inner hoof wall, are inflamed
