Nearly 30 Arabian horses are receiving rehabilitative care after they were seized at a South Carolina farm.

Calhoun County, South Carolina, Sheriff Thomas Summers said he responded to several calls in April from residents complaining about the condition of a herd of Arabian horses residing in St. Matthews. At that time and after an investigation, the horses’ owner Ronald Hevener was arrested on eight counts of ill-treatment to animals, Summers said.

“At that time, we told him how to look after the horses and we gave him some time to do better,” Summers said.

On May 15, Summers returned and, with the land owners’ permission, rescued 29 horses in place
