Countdown to the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games

Countdown to the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games

For the first time ever, the Fédération Equestre Internationale World Equestrian Games (WEG) are being held in France, in a city along the English Channel called Caen.

Caen. I have no idea how that’s pronounced in English.

It's hard enough in French. It's kind of like “caw” except at the end you have to get whiny with your nose like you’re trying to stifle a sneeze. But Caen just happens to be pronounced exactly like the French word, "quand," which means "when." So if you get lost on your way to WEG and have to ask for directions—if you say it right—it'll sound like you’re saying, "Where's when?" (If you don't say it right, you’re going to end up repeating it 15 times with 15 different versions of "caw" that are going to make people think what you really should be looking for is a hospital.)

But today, at less than a month before WEG’s opening ceremonies on August 23, the fact that Caen sounds like "When?" couldn’t be more fitting. Of all questions, "When?" is the one that evokes the most sense of anticipation and excitement: When? When? When? Caen? Caen? Caen? WEG? WEG? WEG?

Yeah, exactly! I absolutely can't wait either!

And neither can all of Normandy. The excitement is brewing. The cider is, well, malolacting (because Normandy is famed for its cider rather than wine, and "fermenting" sounds gross). The cheese is aging. The flowers are blooming. The fish are jumping. The festivities are developing. The parking lots are expanding. The tickets are selling. The hotels are booking. The shows are rehearsing. The athletes are training, and the grooms are grooming.

Everything and everyone is eagerly anticipating the start of this extraordinary equestrian event back, on European soil again after the 2010 Games in the Lexington, Kentucky. All the riders, judges, veterinarians, event planners, spectators, B&B hosts, restaurateurs and shopkeepers, journalists (especially me!), and everyone shouting “When? When? When?”

"Quand, Caen, quand?"

A month. Just less than one short month.

And I. Can’t. Wait.

What WEG events and stories are you eager for?
