The owner of nine horses that died allegedly due to lack of water in Parker County, Texas, earlier this month is now facing animal cruelty charges.

On Aug. 12 Parker County Sheriff’s Deputies and animal control personnel discovered the carcasses of six mares, one gelding, and one filly dead on a property near Weatherford, Tex. Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Deputy Danie Huffman said that no water, feed, or hay was found on the property. Another gelding was discovered alive and transported to a local veterinary facility for treatment and testing where he was later euthanized due to liver and renal failure, Huffman said.

On Aug. 15, the Sheriff’s department obtained a warrant or the arrest of the horses’ caretaker Linda K. Pharis, Huffman said. Under the warrant Pharis is charged with cruelty to livestock animals, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted she faces up to two years in county jail, Huffman said.
