The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Montana Billings Field Office began on-the-ground gather activities for the 2015 Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Gather Aug. 5.

The BLM expects gather operations to continue through August, and adoption schedules and information will be forthcoming.

The BLM said the gather is designed to manage the appropriate number of wild horses so that rangelands and horses can be healthy and productive for years to come. The current wild horse population is approximately 170 horses, exceeding the established appropriate management level of 90 to 120 horses. The BLM expects to remove 15 to 20 horses, aged 1 to 3 years. All excess horses will be available for adoption.

The Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range is public land and will be open to the public during the bait/water trap gather, subject to necessary safety restrictions. The public is welcome to attend the gather and visit bait/water trap locations. While gather operations are underway the public can visit the Britton Springs Corrals, where excess wild horses will be located awaiting adoption, every Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. beginning Aug. 8. Additional tour opportunities could become available at Britton Springs as gather operations progress. Terrain in the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range is rugged and visitors wishing to visit a trap site need a four-wheel drive vehicle. All visitors to the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range should bring a sufficient supply of food, water, and sunscreen, and the BLM recommends appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes
