The Michigan State University (MSU) Extension is holding four equine education sessions in April to inform owners on horse management techniques with positive effects for horse health and environmental quality.

Topics to be discussed include daily operation evaluations to identify potential problems, pasture management, and manure management plans.

"It is important for equine owners of any size operation to have a manure management plan," said Tom Guthrie, MSU Extension educator. "Manure can run off into surface waters, polluting freshwater sources. A successful manure management plan can maintain water quality. The techniques our presenters will discuss will be in accordance with the guidelines set by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in its generally accepted agricultural management practices."

Each session will be made up of three presentations by MSU Extension representatives. The first presentation, "Protecting your Equine Investment: Daily Observations for Equine Owners and Caretakers," will be given by Karen Waite, MS, MSU Extension equine specialist. It will be followed by "Rotation Station–the Ins and Outs" by Phil Kaatz and Mike Metzger, MSU Extension forage educators. The third is "Manure Happens, Now What?" and will be presented by Guthrie
