The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the fatal shooting of two wild horses discovered dead in the Newland Reservoir area in northeastern Lassen County, Calif., near the Nevada border.

BLM Spokesman Jeff Fontana said that on April 3, members of a BLM crew discovered the animals about 12 miles southeast of Eagleville, Calif., while working on a prescribed fire. Initial investigation revealed the horses had most likely been shot and had been dead for several weeks before their carcasses were discovered, Fontana said.

If caught, those responsible could face fines of up to $2,000 and up to one year in prison, Fontana said.
