An Iowa man is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly cutting the tails and manes off horses residing on Buena Vista County properties.

Since 2008, Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department personnel have been investigating numerous incidents from owners reporting that someone had entered pastures or buildings where horses were kept and cut hair from the animals’ manes and tails. More than 25 such incidents were reported in the past three years, the department said.

A spokesperson for the Ohio-based M&M Turf Supply Co. said owners purchase horse hair extensions to lengthen their horses’ tails for exhibition. Horse hair is also used by crafts and jewelry makers and in the manufacture of instrument bows such as for violins and cellos. Per pound retail pricing for horse hair varies from $40 to more than $200 depending upon the hair length and color, she said. Most retailers purchase their horse hair from approved dealers in the U.S. and elsewhere, the spokesperson said.

In a written statement the Sheriff’s Department announced that on July 5, Sheriff’s Department personnel arrested Paul Eugene Condit after a search of his apartment uncovered evidence potentially linking him to alleged horse hair thefts reported within the past three years
