Oregon Horse Shooting Probe Expands

The probe into the shooting deaths of wild horses at the Ochoco National Forest near Prineville, Ore., expanded last week when a Crook County Sheriff’s Department deputy discovered another horse that had apparently been shot and killed.

On March 14, Crook County Sheriff’s Department personnel discovered three wild horses dead in the Ochoco Forest. The animals were among approximately 60 wild horses in the Big Summit Heard Management Area managed by the U.S. Forest Service. A joint investigation by the Forest Service, the County Sheriff’s Department, and the Fish and Wildlife Division of the Oregon State Police revealed that the two stallions and a pregnant mare had sustained gunshot wounds. A yearling accompanying the mare was unhurt.

On April 8, Crook County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Bottoms said he discovered a fourth horse dead as the result of an apparent gunshot wound.

"The investigation into the (shooting) incidents is ongoing," Bottoms said
