An Ohio woman faces multiple animal cruelty charges after county animal welfare authorities removed 31 allegedly malnourished Arabian horses from her property.

Last week animal welfare authorities from the Humane Society of Ottawa County discovered 37 animals allegedly living in filth without food or water. One horse was found dead and five were euthanized at the scene. The remaining 31 horses were moved to the Sandusky County Fairgrounds stables, where another was later euthanized. The surviving animals are receiving rehabilitative care.

On Monday farm operator Robin E. Vess was charged with 42 counts of second degree misdemeanor animal cruelty. Humane Society Prosecutor Chris Marcinko said the charges pertain to 42 animals discovered alive and deceased on the property. Each count carries penalties of up to 90 days in jail and fines up to $750.
