Law enforcement officers in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, checking on a complaint about an abused horse found nearly two dozen neglected animals living inside a double-wide trailer home–including two whitetail deer stashed inside the bedrooms.

The animals were discovered last week when Kootenai County deputies went to the home to check out a complaint of an emaciated horse, Capt. Ben Wolfinger said Wednesday. Besides the malnourished horse in a pasture outside, the deputies found dogs, cats, guinea pigs, a rabbit and the deer inside the home, Wolfinger said.

In all, 23 animals–13 dogs, four guinea pigs, two deer, two cats, one horse, and one rabbit — were seized from the property, Wolfinger said. All were found inside the home, except the horse. So far, one dog has had to be euthanized because it suffered from severe ear infections, tapeworms, fleas, eye conjunctivitis, dental disease and ulcers, according to the sheriff’s report.

The sheriff’s office will ask Kootenai County Prosecutor Bill Douglas to file 21 counts of animal cruelty charges against the couple that lived in the mobile home, Wolfinger said
