Two jockeys were able to escape serious injury when their horses fell while running in the second race at Hawthorne Park on Thursday (April 12), reported the Arlington Heights, Ill., Daily Herald. One of the horses died.

Four-year-old filly Sweet Eileen stumbled during the race, throwing jockey Randall Toups, who was hospitalized later in the day with hand pain. The Daily Herald report indicates that the mare appeared to have suffered a heart attack and died instantly. (For information on cardiac causes of sudden death in horses see www.TheHorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=5331.) Sweet Eileen had been winless in six previous races.

Jockey Danush Sukie was thrown when Peekabootoyou, who was following close behind Sweet Eileen, fell over the stricken filly. Sukie was carried from the track on a stretcher and hospitalized with back and abdominal pain, but his injuries did not appear serious, according to the report. Peekabootoyou, also a 4-year-old filly, came away uninjured from the 6-furlong race for maiden fillies and mares
