“Due to the increased surveillance of any equine abortions in the past two years, the Lexington Disease and Diagnostic Center (LDDC) has increased efforts to identify causes for these abortions. The LDDC is performing additional tests other than the routine fetal screening that is presently done. Evidence of West Nile Virus (WNV) has been found in a small number of fetal tissues by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing. Some of these positives have been confirmed by other labs. West Nile virus has not been known to be a cause of abortion in mares. To our knowledge, other states with higher exposures of WNV have not reported any association with equine abortions
