Winter Health Concerns

Horses are hardy animals when it comes to weathering the cold months. This doesn't mean you can slack on their care, however, just because you're riding less and staying indoors more. In fact, there are some health issues horses are more prone to during winter. Thus, The Horse teamed up with Ava Redig, DVM, of Stillwater Equine Veterinary Clinic, in chilly Minnesota, to describe six common cold weather conditions owners should watch for: respiratory problems, colic, dehydration, choke, thrush, and weight loss.

Work with your veterinarian to keep an eye out for these issues this winter.
