Winter Storms Challenge Barn, Horse Owners

Two feet of snow had already covered the ground in Stoughton, Massachusetts, when the barn roof at Dry Water Farm collapsed. But the cave-in was just one incident challenging horse owners as winter storms brought cold, snow, and sleet to farms from Tennessee to North Carolina.

“It’s like something unreal,” said Davie McNamara, owner of Dry Water Farm.

According to the National Weather Service, February winter storms produced record snow falls in the northeast and mid-central states, while storms carrying freezing rain pelted North Carolina. At the same time, weather watchers recorded bitter cold temperatures throughout the region. As a result, the weather conditions sent farm owners scrambling to keep their animals and properties safe.

At Dry Water Farm McNamara fought to keep snow from accumulating on the roof of a barn housing 33 horses. Even so, on Feb. 15, the barn’s roof collapsed. In response, McNamara and her neighbors rushed to evacuate the horses
