The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has released a report on the status of equine infectious diseases in Canada during the second quarter of 2012, according to an Aug. 8 release from Equine Canada.

"The report outlines the biosecurity measures in place relating to the reporting and eradication of infectious equine diseases in Canada," the release read.

In the report the CFIA details the three classifications of diseases in Canada:

  • Reportable diseases (those "of significant importance to human or animal health or to the Canadian economy," including African horse sickness, anthrax, contagious equine metritis, equine infectious anemia, piroplasmosis, rabies, Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis, and vesicular stomatitis);
  • Immediately notifiable diseases ("diseases exotic to Canada for which there are no control or eradication programs" and/or some "rare indigenous diseases," including dourine, Western and Eastern encephalomyelitis, West Nile virus, glanders, hendra virus, and Japanese encephalitis); and
  • Annually notifiable diseases ("diseases for which Canada must submit an annual report to the World Organization for Animal Health indicating their presence within Canada. In general they are diseases that are present in Canada, but are not classified as reportable or immediately notifiable," including botulism, equine herpesvirus type 3, equine influenza, equine rhinopneumonitis, horse mange, equine viral arteritis, and strangles).

The report also discusses each of the reportable diseases and their presence or lack thereof in Canada for the second quarter of 2012
