An animal welfare group hopes the offer of a cash reward will lead Indiana law enforcement authorities to whoever used a captive bolt gun to shoot a Standardbred mare while she grazed in her pasture.

In May, Lady May Z, an 8-year-old racing mare was discovered dead in her pasture. Necropsy results later revealed that the horse had been killed by a fatal captive bolt gun shot to the head between the eyes. The killing took place the day before the mare was scheduled to compete in a practice race at Balmoral Park in Crete, Ill.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

On June 6, the Humane Society of the United States announced that it was offering a cash reward of up to $2,500 for the identification, arrest, and conviction of those responsible for the killing
