The herd on Shackleford Banks is cooperatively managed by the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc., and Cape Lookout National Seashore. This herd is considered one of the most pure. Removed foals are available for adoption.

Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Bob Vogel has announced that a 7-month-old filly and a 9-month-old filly were removed from Shackleford Banks in early March. Veterinarians provided mild sedatives and the youngsters were transported by boat to the mainland
