The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) announced Monday that additional horses have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV), bringing the total number of equine WNV cases in the state this year to 17.

The latest additions include five from the Northern Virginia area and one from Accomack County on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. So far this year, there have been 14 positive horses in Northern Virginia, and one each from Accomack, Franklin, and Rockingham Counties.

Fifteen of the affected horses had not been vaccinated for WNV, and the two that were had not received the full course of vaccinations prior to becoming ill.
