An Arkansas man will spend a decade in prison after pleading guilty to shooting a horse last year.

In May 2016, the owners of the Jarratt Stables in St. Francis County, Arkansas, reported finding one of their horses dead in a pasture. Deputy Jeff Nichols, of the Forrest City Police Department, said the animal had been shot in the neck at close range.

Authorities later arrested Brandon Mitchell and charged him with felony aggravated animal cruelty and felony criminal mischief.

Mitchell pleaded guilty and, on Jan. 18, was sentenced to serve 10 years in connection with the charges, a representative for the St. Francis County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office said
