More Than 200 Horses Displaced by California Wildfires

Most of the evacuated horses are residing at the Fairplex fairgrounds, while some are stabled at Santa Anita Park.

Horse haulers, fairgrounds managers, and racetrack operators all worked together this week to evacuate more than 200 horses ahead of the San Gabriel Complex fire in Southern California.

The blaze broke out June 20 in the Angeles National Forest and in the foothills above Duarte and Azusa, California. By June 23 the fire had consumed nearly 5,000 acres and forced hundreds of residents from their homes.

Horse transporter Tom Hubbard, of Bob Hubbard Horse Transportation, began evacuating horses from the fire zone on June 20, including those from the Bliss Canyon Thoroughbred Farm in Bradbury and the Rainbow Canyon Ranch in Azusa.

“In (the Rainbow Canyon Ranch) case we were moving horses as the fire was within minutes of the burning the barn,” Hubbard said. “We just loaded horses and got going
