West Nile Cases Confirmed in California, Wyoming Horses

Horses in California and Wyoming have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV).

In California, the state Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) said an unvaccinated 2-year-old Thoroughbred filly in Fresno County, which was displaying severe neurologic signs, was confirmed positive on July 19. The filly has died.

“For 2017, a total of two horses (in California) have been confirmed positive for WNV,” the CDFA said. “The positive horses were located in Fresno and Kern Counties. Both horses were unvaccinated and both horses died or were euthanized.”

Meanwhile, in Wyoming, a horse in Campbell County also tested positive, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported July 19
