The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada’s Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office is hosting a public/media pre-gather tour on Aug. 18 for the McGee Mountain wild burro water- and bait-trap gather.

Interested media and public will meet at the BLM office at 5100 E. Winnemucca Blvd., in Winnemucca, Nevada, and be ready to leave at 8 a.m. Visitors must RSVP by calling the gather information hotline at 775/861-6700 and choosing option 2 or by contacting Terah Malsam, public affairs specialist, at 775/623-1518. The BLM requests that attendees read the pre-gather documents on the gather webpage prior to attending the tour.

“The purpose of the pre-gather tour is to get the public out on the ground and show them the reasons for the gather and condition of the range before operations commence later in the week,” said Aron King, acting Humboldt River field manager. Because the gather is taking place on private land, the pre-gather tour is the only opportunity interested public will have to view the gather area and trap site.

The McGee Mountain gather area is located in Humboldt County approximately 20 miles west of Denio, Nevada. The gather area is comprised of approximately 47,000 acres of private and public lands. The BLM says removing the excess wild burros will help prevent further deterioration of the range and water resources, as well as address private land issues. There are currently an estimated 146 wild burros, not including the 2015 foals, in the gather area and associated herd management area, based on an aerial population count conducted in July 2014
