The Minnesota horse community celebrated groundbreaking for the $14 million University of Minnesota Equine Center on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 9. The soon-to-be-built facility has been designed to provide an ideal atmosphere for state-of-the-art diagnostics, research focused on the causes of performance problems in equine athletes, and in-depth education.

The complex will include a conference hall, indoor arena, high-speed treadmill, and custom-designed lameness and reproductive evaluation areas.

In conjunction with the groundbreaking, Patricia Olson, DVM, PhD, president/CEO of the Morris Animal Foundation, announced that the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine will led a new $2.5 million Equine Consortium for Genetic Research program (see www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=7397)
