An equine welfare investigator made a grizzly discovery on July 4 when she found the butchered remains of a horse discarded along a Florida roadside.

Jeanette Jordan, president of the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said welfare investigator Laurie Waggoner was responding to an equine cruelty complaint when she spotted several fly-covered bags lying along a roadside near Okeechobee Rd. in the Miami-Dade area. Upon further examination, Waggoner discovered the bags contained the remains of a Thoroughbred horse apparently butchered for its meat. The horse is the latest among several equines found butchered in Florida’s Miami-Dade area since 2009.

"The bags contained entrails and all the parts of the horse the butchers don’t use," Jordan said. "We could tell by the remains that the horse was a Thoroughbred, but we couldn’t identify the horse by its tattoo because so much of its flesh was gone."

Jordan alerted Miami-Dade law enforcement authorities about the discovery, but she holds out little hope that the horse’s killer will be caught
