The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for shooting a wild horse in Nevada.

On Feb. 9 an on-site veterinarian conducting health assessments during the agency's Elko District's Antelope Complex wild horse gather discovered a mare that had sustained what appeared to be a puncture wound to her upper leg at the left front shoulder.

Heather Emmons, BLM spokesperson, said the mare was transported to the gather holding facility and placed in a pen separate from other gathered animals where she remained under veterinarian observation. On Feb. 10 the mare's left front leg broke when she spun around in the corral. The mare was euthanized as a result of the injury. Further examination revealed that the puncture wound was the result of a gunshot. The on-site veterinarian determined that the wound was a major contributing factor to the leg break, Emmons said.

Emmons said that prior to the gather the animal was located in an area sometimes visited by hunters
