Harvey Still Displacing Texas Horses

Sam Houston Race Park’s stable manager is still fielding calls from owners hoping to relocate their horses there.

While Tropical Storm Harvey is leaving much of the Texas Gulf Coast inundated with flood waters, Sam Houston Race Park (SHRP), in Houston, is still accepting horses displaced by the storm.

Last week, Hurricane Harvey took aim at the Texas coast, bringing catastrophic rain and flooding to Corpus Christi as well as parts of Houston and Galveston.

While some owners began moving their horses out of the flood zone early, others waited until the storm was well underway. As a result, the SHRP stable manager was still fielding calls on Aug. 28 from owners as far away as College Station hoping to relocate their horses there.

“We have 15 horses here now and we’re expecting to have more by this afternoon,” said SHRP spokesman Roland Tamez. “Only south and southwest Houston is flooded; we’re at a high enough elevation to accommodate them
