More than 100 horses are in the care of the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) after being removed from a farm near Calgary earlier this week.

Alberta SPCA Executive Director Terra Johnston said the investigation into the horses’ condition began after a tipster contacted the agency about the animals. Acting on a warrant, agency investigators along with Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) personnel visited the property April 18 and found the horses without adequate feed, Johnston said.

After a veterinary examination, the animals were deemed in compromised condition and removed from the property.

"They are now in a caretaking facility receiving care," Johnston said
