Trigger, the horse ridden nearly 700 miles from Greenwood, South Carolina, to Miami-Dade, Florida, last year, has found a permanent home in the Florida Keys.

Last November, Laurie Waggoner, director of ranch operations for the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), said her organization began receiving reports about a man who was riding a horse through Florida en route to Key West. A passersby also notified Miami-Dade police after spotting the horse and rider traveling southbound on highway US-1.

Police said the horse, named Trigger, appeared to be malnourished and had sores in his mouth when they caught up to the pair. An examination revealed that the animal was a 20-year-gelding who was blind in one eye and had a Henneke body condition score of 3.

Police arrested and charged the rider, Christopher Michael Emerson, with animal cruelty and violating the state’s animal health requirements. Trigger was released into South Florida SPCA custody
