Two horses discovered wandering in a Ft. Wayne, Ind., park last week are now city property and might be eventually placed with an equine assisted therapy program, according to a written statement released by the City of Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control Department.

Department Spokesperson Peggy Bender said the horse were discovered wandering in Johnny Appleseed Park on April 21. The animals legally became city property April 26 after their owner failed to step forward.

The horses are currently in quarantine and are under veterinary treatment for a Streptococcus equi infection, a contagious upper respiratory ailment commonly known as strangles.

After their complete recovery, the horses will be evaluated for use in an equine assisted therapy program, the statement said
