Rachel Alexandra is expected to return to Stonestreet Farm in Lexington, Ky., on Jan. 30 or 31 after being treated at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, also located in Lexington, as a precautionary measure for pain management related to the Jan. 22 birth of a colt by Curlin.

"She is fine," Caroline Shaw, a spokeswoman for Stonestreet and owner Barbara Banke, said Jan. 30. Shaw said the 2009 Horse of the Year was monitored during her stay at Rood & Riddle while under the care of Bonnie Barr, VMD, Dipl. ACVIM. She did not know of any treatments the mare might have received during her stay.

Rachel Alexandra and her newborn were transported to Rood & Riddle Jan. 27. On its website Stonestreet Farm posted a video of the colt by Curlin playing in the paddock at Rood & Riddle Jan. 28, a day after they were sent to the facility. The colt was also expected to return to Stonestreet along with the mare.

"Rachel has proven to be an extraordinary mother and taking to her feisty colt right away," Banke said in a release shortly after the mare was sent to the hospital. "I’m a Rachel-chondriac. We are taking every precaution to ensure that Rachel and her colt are healthy and happy
