Online Horse Rescue Operator Charged With Animal Cruelty

A Pennsylvania woman who operated an equine rescue via a social media page has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.

Susan Martin, director of the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), said Crystal Davis was operating the “A Life Saved is A Life Saved” horse rescue via a page on Facebook. On three occasions, animal welfare authorities responded to calls regarding the condition of horses at the property where Davis kept them, Martin said.

On May 1 investigators served a warrant regarding the animals’ welfare and on May 2 SPCA personnel removed 10 horses from the property, Martin said.

At the time of their removal, most of the horses had body condition scores of 3 on the Henneke body condition scale and five were found to have pneumonia, including a foal that was hospitalized. All the horses were treated with antibiotics by a veterinarian and their conditions improved, Martin said. Blood tests also indicated that the five horses were also anemic, she said, “which the vet has attributed to poor nutrition
