A South Dakota man accused of releasing more than 30 horses from their stalls at a county fairgrounds has been indicted by a grand jury.

Earlier this month, 37 racehorses residing at the Stanley County, South Dakota, Fairgrounds were released from their stalls, said Stanley County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Greg Swanson.

Personnel from the Stanley County Sheriff's Department, the Pierre Police Department, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, along with members of the local horse community, rounded up the horses after their release, Swanson said; the majority of the horses were found on an island in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, but five horses were found roaming near Pierre. Each of the five horses found near Pierre sustained various injuries, and two of those animals might never race again, Swanson said.

Jordan James Pourier was later arrested and charged with six counts of injuring an animal and one count each of trespassing, third-degree burglary, and aggravated assault
