The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) has received test results confirming a single case of equine herspesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in that state.

On March 28, Dustin Vande Hoef, IDALS communications director, told The Horse that one horse residing near the community of Marion had tested positive for EHV-1 and noted that the department's investigation into the case was ongoing.

EHV-1 is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses), abortion in broodmares, and myeloencephalopathy (EHM, the neurologic form). Myeloencephalopathy is characterized by fever, ataxia (incoordination), weakness or paralysis of limbs, and incontinence.
