A New York man has pleaded guilty to a criminal mischief charge after accepting a plea agreement connected to the shooting death of a horse in Oneida County last year.

In December 2015, police responded to a complaint of shots fired near a horse farm in Kirkland. When they arrived a witness reported seeing a white man using a long gun to shoot into a pasture from inside a gray Dodge Avenger. Later the same afternoon, an owner called police to report that her show horse had been fatally shot in the neck. Two other horses located in the same paddock were unharmed. Later, Kirkland Police Chief Daniel L. English said his department received many calls about seeing the vehicle allegedly involved in the incident.

In February, acting on a tip, police arrested Robert Webster Jr. of Durhamville, New York, in connection with the incident and charged him with Class D felony criminal mischief, criminal mischief in the second degree, Class E felony animal cruelty, and Class A misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

On Sept. 1, Webster appeared in Oneida District Court where, under a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to second degree criminal mischief, a written statement from the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office said. Under the agreement, Webster will serve a sentence in the New York State Prison and pay restitution for the value of the horse
