Introduction to Farriery Short Course Scheduled

The University of Maryland Extension has scheduled an Introduction to Farriery Short Course for Dec. 3-4, 2011. The course can only accommodate 20 attendees, so interested individuals are encouraged to register early.

"Through a combination of lectures and hands-on laboratories, equine professionals and casual horse enthusiasts alike will gain a basic understanding of the equine hoof, its anatomy and function, and care requirements," the program brochure read. "Anyone is welcome to register; no experience is necessary."

The instructor for the course will be Mike Poe, CJF, owner of Maryland-based Alpha Farrier Services. Topics to be covered in lectures include leg anatomy, leg dissection, and shoeing evaluations. Hands-on labs will cover emergency shoe removal, evaluation of conformation and shoeing plans, live shoeing for evaluation, and a showcase of farrier work.

The course fee is $75 per person, which includes course materials and lunch both days. All farrier tools are provided.
