While fire consumed more than 800 acres in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest, the group charged with managing the feral horse herd residing there discovered a foal had been born while the blaze was underway.

On April 27, the Cactus fire broke out near the Salt River in the national forest. While the fire burned, U.S. Forest Service personnel and volunteers from the nonprofit Salt River Wild Horse Management Group (SRWHMG) monitored the Salt River horses, including a pregnant mare. The groups reported that the animals were largely unaffected.

“Many different bands seemed to stay close together, but they all stayed calm,” said SRWHMG President Simone Netherlands.

On May 3, volunteers discovered that the mare had given birth to a healthy colt near the wildfire zone
