A Florida woman is facing grand theft charges for allegedly stealing three show horses and attempting to sell one of them online.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office records indicate that an owner reported that his three show horses—DeChamp, Peota CVI, and Guerrero de can mas—had been stolen. The animals—which had been imported from Germany, Spain, and Mexico respectively—were collectively valued in excess of $220,000. The records say the owner told detectives that he had hired someone to train, care for, and show the horses, and had rented a residence in Wellington for her use. The owner subsequently noticed that the trainer was spending money excessively, and he instructed her to return with the three horses to Mexico. Working with a private investigator, the owner discovered that the trainer had allegedly tried to sell Guerrero de can mas for $65,000, sheriff’s office records indicate.

The records also indicate that the owner told detectives the animals had been moved from the Wellington property to another in Lake Worth, Florida. On May 15, the animals were located in Loxahatchee, Florida, where the owner took possession of them.

The trainer, Elena Richart Escoda, was subsequently arrested and charged with grand theft and uttering a forgery for allegedly continuously moving the horses in an attempt to keep them from their rightful owner
