Duke is the most popular and longest-serving police horse on the Lancaster City, Pa., police force. While he is expected to make a full recovery from colic surgery performed at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, the mounted police unit needs help paying those bills.

"This was a big hit to the mounted unit," said Lt. Todd Umstead, Public Information Officer for the Lancaster City Police, of the $8,000 in medical bills still owed. "The officers' salaries are the only things paid for by the city; all the rest is paid for by donations.

St. Umstead said Duke has had his sutures removed and was returned home from the veterinary clinic a little more than a week ago, but he's resting and recovering; it will be a while before he's back on duty.

"Duke has been here the longest (of any of the police horses)," said Lt. Umstead. "A lot of people have been calling and asking about him
