The annual Farm Safety Symposium will go “back to basics” in its 2007 edition Mar. 9 in Elizabethtown, Ky.

The symposium will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Pritchard Community Center. Doors will open at 5 p.m. The symposium will run in conjunction with the 45th annual Dixie Fire School, which is scheduled March 9-11.

The symposium will emphasize how farm workers can protect themselves when working on the farm and using farm equipment. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Farm and Home Safety Program will conduct the symposium. The program’s new unofficial mascot, “Willie B.,” will make his debut at the symposium. The KDA also will display lawn mowers and all-terrain vehicles.

During the Dixie Fire School, Dale Dobson, the KDA’s Farm and Home Safety Program administrator, will conduct classes on farm rescues Mar. 10 and 11. The classes will cover common types of farm accidents, farm equipment mechanics, and other topics. Emergency workers will be instructed on special techniques required to successfully coordinate and execute an agricultural rescue
