Nationally ranked and top ranking New York Thoroughbred sire American Chance died on Tuesday, Oct. 18 while standing Southern Hemisphere duties at La Providencia in Argentina. The San Isidro Equine Hospital in Buenos Aires cited colitis-X as the cause of American Chance’s death.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, colitis-X is a peracute, fatal disease of horses that is “characterized by sudden onset of profuse watery diarrhea and development of hypovolemic shock (a condition where there are abnormally low levels of blood plasma in the body, such that the body is unable to properly maintain blood pressure, cardiac output of blood, and normal amounts of fluid in the tissues). Many affected horses have a history of stress. The cause of colitis-X is unknown, although multiple causes have been proposed, including peracute salmonellosis, clostridial enterocolitis, and endotoxemia.”

Bred in Kentucky by Bertram and Diana Firestone, the 15-year-old American Chance was by champion sire Cure The Blues and out of the winning Seattle Slew mare American Dance. He was purchased and campaigned by John Gunther of Glennwood Farm. A stakes winner at two, G2 and G3 winner at three, and G1 placed by five; American Chance won $847,977. “American Chance was a consistent, tough, and sound horse,” said trainer Niall O’Callaghan. He captured the G2 Jersey Derby, the G2 Forego H. defeating Kentucky Derby winner Go for Gin, the G3 Lafayette S. equaling the Keeneland track record, and the Don Bernhardt S. in record time.

American Chance is the sire of graded stakes winners Bending Strings, Eye Of The Tiger, Devine Wind, American Halo, etc., and stakes winners Joyous Song, Chance Dance, Cut and Shoot, etc. He is consistently ranked nationally among top sires and disputably New York’s leading sire; ranking # 1 sire of stakes winners and # 2 general sire in New York. “I truly love American Chance,” said Kiaran McLaughlin, trainer of Bending Strings, Eye Of The Tiger, and Devine Wind. “He throws grand looking horses with great temperaments and tons of ability
