Help Us Help Horses

Did you know that the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) is the world's largest professional asso-ciation of equine veterinarians? Did you also know that the AAEP has a Foundation? The AAEP Foundation was created and established as a 501(c)(3) in 1994 as the charitable arm of the AAEP, and it operates under a Founda-tion Advisory Committee comprised of a group of highly regarded AAEP member veterinarians and equine industry leaders.

The AAEP Foundation's mission is to improve the health and welfare of the horse through support of research, education, benevolence, and the equine community.

An important piece of information is that the AAEP organization supports the administrative costs of the AAEP Founda-tion; therefore, 100% of all donations received by the Foundation are used directly to help horses.

The AAEP Foundation is much more than a funding organization. It was founded to unite everyone who is dedicated to improving horse health, and it remains dedicated to helping horses through relevant research, education, and outreach.

There are many ways that horse owners can "Help Us Help Horses." The AAEP Foundation has an established funding program along with many programs dedicated to helping coordinate equine research and sharing the results of this co-ordination with those involved in the equine industry. The Foundation also provides scholarships to those individuals with a sincere interest in equine veterinary medicine.

A sample of programs the Foundation helps includes:

  • Industry Panels and Summits The Foundation actively sponsors meetings covering research topics impor-tant to the equine community. They have brought together world leaders in horse health for events such as the Laminitis Blue Ribbon Panel, Equine Genome Panel, Equine Respiratory Panel, Equine Colic Research Symposium, and Equine Research Summit.
  • Veterinary Student Education Programs During each school year, the Foundation sends AAEP members to veterinary schools to teach short courses to students on topics such as dentistry, emergency preparedness and farrier techniques.
  • Horse Owner Education The Foundation supports owner education activities and meetings hosted by the AAEP and other equine organizations.

There are many ways that you can include the AAEP Foundation in your philanthropic endeavors. For example, the Equine Memorial Program allows you to make a donation to memorialize a beloved equine companion or that of a friend who has experienced the loss of a horse.

Of course, general donations are always appreciated, and planned giving provides another way to preserve your legacy of dedication to the horse. Many people who are planning their estates include the AAEP Foundation as a recipient of funds or donate life insurance policies, stocks, or even 401(k) rollovers to the Foundation.

As horse lovers, we all understand the importance and the need to care for our equine companions in the best ways possible. In its dedication to the betterment of horse health and welfare, the AAEP Foundation is in a unique position to be a global leader in achieving a better future for equine health.

The AAEP Foundation Inc. is deeply appreciative of the generosity of its supporters. Contributions directly benefit the Foundation's work to ensure a healthier tomorrow for the horse.
